Short answer: Kit's free plan lets you manage up to 10,000 subscribers, with unlimited landing pages, forms and broadcasts, tagging, and selling digital products (kit.com/pricing, checked 2026-10-10). What it leaves out is automation: visual automations and email sequences start on the paid Creator plan (kit.com/pricing, checked 2026-10-10).

What you get for $0

  • Up to 10,000 subscribers (kit.com/pricing, checked 2026-10-10)
  • Unlimited landing pages and forms (kit.com/pricing, checked 2026-10-10)
  • Unlimited email broadcasts (kit.com/pricing, checked 2026-10-10)
  • Audience tagging and segmentation (kit.com/pricing, checked 2026-10-10)
  • Sell digital products and subscriptions. Kit's fee is 3.5% + 30¢ per transaction, which includes card processing (kit.com/pricing, checked 2026-10-10)

What you don't get

  • Visual automations and automated email sequences (Creator plan and up) (kit.com/pricing, checked 2026-10-10)
  • Removing Kit branding (Creator plan and up) (kit.com/pricing, checked 2026-10-10). Note: the pricing page lists A/B testing subject lines under Creator, while the Free plan help article lists "A/B testing on your broadcasts" as included (help.kit.com, checked 2026-10-10). Check your account.

When to upgrade

The Creator plan is listed at $33/mo billed yearly ($390/yr) for 1,000 subscribers, and it has a 14-day free trial (kit.com/pricing, checked 2026-10-10). Prices go up as your list grows, so check the slider on the pricing page for your size. Upgrade when you need a welcome sequence that runs on its own.

Who the free plan suits

New creators building a list with a landing page and sending manual broadcasts. If you need automations from day one, compare it with Systeme.io's free plan, which includes 1 automation rule (systeme.io/pricing, checked 2026-10-10).

Kit free plan subscriber limit

The free plan lists "up to 10,000 subscribers" (kit.com/pricing, checked 2026-10-10). Kit counts only unique, active subscribers toward that limit (kit.com/pricing, checked 2026-10-10).

Does the Kit free plan include automation?

Kit's official pages currently disagree, so here is exactly what each says (all checked 2026-10-10):

  • Kit pricing page: Unlimited Visual Automations and email sequences are listed under the paid Creator plan, not Free.
  • "The Kit Free plan" (help article, updated about two weeks before our check): "Visual automations and the automation template library" and "Email sequences" are listed under "What needs a paid plan."
  • "Visual Automations on the Newsletter Plan" (help article dated September 6, 2026): on the free Newsletter Plan "you can create one Email Sequence and one basic Visual Automation."

Our read: the newer "Free plan" article and the pricing page suggest new free accounts don't get automations, and the Newsletter Plan article may describe an older version of the free plan. We can't confirm that. If a welcome sequence matters to you, check what your account shows before you rely on it. Kit offers a 14-day free trial of the Creator plan (kit.com/pricing, checked 2026-10-10).

Kit free plan vs alternatives

Our take (based on Kit's published plan details, not long-term use)

For a new creator, a 10,000-subscriber limit is generous, and unlimited landing pages, forms and broadcasts cover the basics of building a list. The main trade-off is automation: if you want new subscribers to get a welcome series without you lifting a finger, plan on the paid Creator plan or confirm what your free account includes. We haven't yet used Kit's free plan over time, so we can't comment on deliverability or support. A free plan won't grow a list by itself; results depend on your content and audience.
